Curriculum should serve your child, not run your homeschool.

 You found a curriculum with glowing reviews. (brain, translate this into curriculum = tool to teach topics. Topics = curriculum) 

Other homeschool moms love it. The lessons are beautifully organized.

The samples look engaging, and the scope and sequence make you feel wonderfully responsible.

Quick as a fiddle, you order it, and it’s delivered…

There is just one small problem.

Your child hates it.

Now every lesson takes twice as long.

The workbook that promised independence requires you to sit beside your child the entire time.

The hands-on activities that looked delightful online feel like assembling furniture without instructions.

You start wondering:

“Am I using it wrong?”

“Should I make my child finish?”

“Did I choose badly?”

Let’s pause right there.

One of the most important reminders in my Choosing Curriculum Workshop is:

Teach the child, not the curriculum.

Your child is the learner.

The curriculum is the tool.

That means your child does not need to bend, squeeze, and struggle to fit inside a program simply because you paid for it.

The program should support the way your child learns.

Before choosing the “curriculum”, consider:

Your child’s personality.

Their interests and talents.

The time of day they learn best.

Whether they need to see it, hear it, move through it, or talk about it.

How much independence can they realistically handle right now?

And please remember, children in the same family may need completely different tools.

The curriculum that works beautifully for one child may flop spectacularly with another.

Nothing has gone wrong. You are gathering information. You are learning more about the child in front of you.

In the workshop, I share that my favorite way to understand how my children learned was not through finding the perfect quiz or label.

It was through spending time together, paying attention, and using trial and error.

That may feel less certain than choosing a program marked “Grade 4.”

But it is the work that makes a customized education possible.

Your Action Step

Choose one child and finish this sentence:

My child learns best when...

Maybe they learn best when they can move.

When the lesson is short.

When they understand why it matters.

When they can work alone.

When you sit nearby.

When they can draw, build, talk, act it out, or follow a question farther.

Do not write what you think should be true.

Write what you have actually noticed.

Leave a comment with your child’s name (feel free to use a code name, nickname, or initials if that’s more comfortable), plus one thing you know about how they learn best.

It does not have to sound educational or impressive.

“Busy Bee needs a snack first” is useful information.

So is:  “#3 understands everything when she can explain it to the dog.” or

“My son likes sitting at the table.”

You can keep personal details private and still share what you’re noticing.

The better you know your child, the easier it becomes to choose tools that fit.

Plot twist: That isn’t curriculum.

In my last post, I asked you to consider what you’re hoping curriculum will solve.

Today, I want to clear up one little word that may be making the entire decision feel heavier than it needs to be:

Curriculum.

When most homeschool moms say “curriculum,” they’re thinking about:

The boxed program.

The math workbook.

The online classes.

The unit study.

The giant stack of books currently taking over the dining room table.

But those things are actually tools.

Your curriculum is what you want your child to learn.

Multiplication facts.

Paragraph writing.

The life cycle of a plant.

Ancient Egypt.

How to read a map.

How to communicate clearly.

The books, videos, lessons, printables, field trips, conversations, and programs are simply the tools you can use to teach the curriculum, those topics.

This may sound like a tiny difference, but it changes everything.

You are not searching for one magical program that must carry your child’s entire education.

You are choosing tools that help a real child learn specific things.

Let’s say you want your child to understand how plants grow.

You could use:

A library book.

A short video.

A seed planted in a cup.

A nature walk.

A printable diagram.

A conversation sparked by a question.

You probably don’t need all six.

You only need the tools that make sense for your child, your schedule, and your energy right now.

And here’s where curriculum shopping sometimes gets backward:

We find an exciting tool first, then try to create a need for it.

Oh, look! A complete, color-coded, 472-page unit on medieval basket weaving!

Surely someone in this house needs to learn that.

Instead, start with the topic or skill.

Then ask:

What is the simplest tool I can use to help my child learn this?

Your Action Step

Make two quick lists today.

List One: What do I want my child to learn this season?

List Two: What tools do I already have that could help?

Check your shelves, your hard drive, the library, and even the resources you bought last year and lovingly forgot existed.

You may discover that you do not need more “curriculum”.

You need clarity about how to use what you already have.

Maybe you’ve already started thinking about curriculum.

A new math program.

An all-in-one box.

An online platform.

A prettier planner with tabs that surely contain the secret to homeschool peace.

I understand the appeal.

When homeschooling feels uncertain, new curriculum feels like a plan.

It gives you something concrete to research, compare, purchase, organize, and confidently announce: “This is what we’re using next year.”

But before you read another review or add anything else to your cart, I want you to pause and ask:

What am I hoping curriculum will solve?

Maybe you’re hoping it will give you structure.

Maybe you want reassurance that your child is learning enough.

Maybe you’re tired of second-guessing every decision.

Maybe lessons have become a struggle, and you’re hoping a new program will make your child excited to learn again.

Maybe you simply want a fresh start.

None of those desires are wrong.

But curriculum can teach multiplication, organize history chronologically, and give you a clear sequence of lessons.

It cannot guarantee smooth days.

It cannot make every child love every subject.

And it cannot carry the responsibility of proving that you are a capable homeschool mom.

When we ask curriculum to solve a confidence problem, no program ever feels like enough.

We keep searching because we’re not really looking for another book.

We’re looking for relief.

One of the first questions in my Choosing Curriculum Workshop is:

What outcome do you want from your curriculum?

That question comes before choosing the program because the tool should fit the outcome, the child, and the real family using it, not the other way around.
